La cavit\u00e9 que forme la structure interne de l\u2019instrument est constitu\u00e9e de trois chambres ou volumes creux. Cette cavit\u00e9 est de nature complexe, comme cela l\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 expliqu\u00e9 dans la th\u00e8se (<em>Le rub\u0101b afghan, \u00e9tude historique, musicologique et organologique d&rsquo;un luth d&rsquo;Asie Centrale<\/em>, pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e par Sylvain Roy et soutenue le 12 d\u00e9cembre 2017, \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Paris Nanterre, sous la direction de professeur \u00e9m\u00e9rite Jean During). Les trois chambres de la cavit\u00e9 de l\u2019instrument participent directement \u00e0 son timbre, elles sont ici repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es par les lettres A, B et C\u00a0:<\/p><p>La chambre A, ou dite \u00ab sup\u00e9rieure \u00bb, a pour fonction premi\u00e8re d\u2019all\u00e9ger le manche. M\u00eame si elle est d\u2019un volume peut important, elle participe au timbre de l&rsquo;instrument. Cela n&rsquo;est probablement pas significativement audible, mais son action sur l&rsquo;acoustique est \u00e0 prendre en compte.<\/p><p>La chambre B, nomm\u00e9 \u00ab m\u00e9diane \u00bb, est \u00e9troite et profonde, elle joue un r\u00f4le important dans le timbre et l\u2019acoustique de l\u2019instrument.<\/p><p>La chambre C, dite \u00ab inf\u00e9rieure \u00bb, est la plus importante. Elle est souvent aussi large que profonde. C\u2019est sur cette derni\u00e8re qu\u2019est tendue la table d\u2019harmonie en peau. C&rsquo;est la chambre qui joue un r\u00f4le premier dans l&rsquo;\u00e9laboration du timbre et de l\u2019acoustique de l\u2019instrument. Les chambres B et C communique au travers d\u2019une \u00e9troite ouverte, cit\u00e9e au niveau des \u00e9chancrures lat\u00e9rales.
