The <strong data-start=\"445\" data-end=\"454\">rub\u0101b <\/strong>is directly threatened with extinction, despite being the very embodiment of Afghan culture. The <strong data-start=\"962\" data-end=\"971\">rub\u0101b<\/strong> a musical instrument that I have been studying for over twenty years, is under direct threat. In my interview, I explain that, although there are other versions of the instrument played in other Asian countries, the one invented in Afghanistan is in real danger.<\/p><p data-start=\"1222\" data-end=\"1511\">I would also like to point out that the <strong data-start=\"1250\" data-end=\"1259\">rub\u0101b<\/strong> is the only rub\u0101b-type lute to face this threat, the other rub\u0101bs are not in danger (those played in Badakhshan, Baluchistan, Kashmir, Uzbekistan or Tajikistan). I was keen to highlight the urgency of the situation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f12d8d e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"9f12d8d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e9bf8c3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"e9bf8c3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afghanrubab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/DSC03689-1024x683.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-2535\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" data-srcset=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9feb623 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"9feb623\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a43825f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a43825f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Afghan Musicians: Resistance Through Exile<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1ee7ed9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1ee7ed9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1578\" data-end=\"2050\">Beyond Afghanistan's borders, some musicians continue to keep the tradition of Afghan music and the rub\u0101b alive. <strong data-start=\"1678\" data-end=\"1700\">Ustad Fazel Sapand<\/strong>, a talented musician and founder of the Honarestan music academy in Herat, had to flee his country because of the many threats he received. He settled in Lisbon, along with other Afghan musicians. Although these artists can now practise their music in complete freedom, they face major difficulties: the absence of an initiated public, the total disappearance of traditional contexts linked to the practice of music and economic difficulties, or the need to support themselves in foreign countries.<\/p><p data-start=\"2052\" data-end=\"2297\">In the interview, I wanted to emphasise the extent to which this diaspora of artists, although a beacon of hope, faces new challenges. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7786b3d e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"7786b3d\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d75e682 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"d75e682\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a80305 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"1a80305\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afghanrubab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/DSC04751-1024x488.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-2231\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" data-srcset=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6f05c17 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"6f05c17\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-056b50b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"056b50b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Rub\u0101b: An Instrument Still Made in Afghanistan, Despite Everything<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9c33f7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f9c33f7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"783\" data-end=\"1220\">During the interview, I also raised the question of the production of the <strong data-start=\"2451\" data-end=\"2460\">rub\u0101b<\/strong> in Afghanistan. Despite the ban imposed by the Taliban, there are still luthier workshops in the country. Of course, conditions are extremely difficult and risky. The craftsmen face major obstacles, but some manage to get round the bans by exporting the various parts of the instrument to neighbouring countries for assembly on the other side of the border.
